About the Photographer

Joy In the Small Pieces of Life

Hello, Friends! Thanks for stopping by to “meet” me here. I’m Malaina, the person behind the camera at Malaina Kinne Photography.

With years spent in both the accounting and fitness industries, a new career in photography certainly wasn’t in the plan back in 2017 when I started this journey.

Having left my corporate accounting department job to be home with my girls, I began working as a fitness coach. And I loved it! I thrive on movement that makes you feel good, and I enjoyed sharing that with other people.

But in 2017, my body decided it had a different plan. After undergoing a hysterectomy, it was time to find a gentler line of work.

And then my husband bought me a camera.

Photographing All the Things

I had always enjoyed taking pictures as a kid, but it was never on my radar as a “job.” When my husband gave me that camera, everything changed. I was thrilled to have this outlet that brought me joy from the get-go.

And when I had my first paid gig as a high school reunion photographer, I was hooked. I started taking every opportunity I could get, from senior pictures to product photography. Everyone deserves the chance to have their special moments caught on camera.

I delight in capturing candid moments that show a person’s true self. And I love getting photos that show the eyes. They always speak the truth, and they invite a level of genuine connection that is so powerful.

Eventually, I began pursuing macro photography. This practice involves taking close-up pictures of anything from flowers to shoes. And this sparks all the joy for me!

Macro photography brings hidden details to light and makes even an ordinary item seem extraordinary. Some of my happiest moments are spent outside with my camera when the clock doesn’t matter, and I can just explore while snapping photos.

When I was young, I remember writing a story about my friend and me shrinking down and going on adventures. I loved the idea of being little so that everything else would look enormous. So I guess macro photography fits right in. Taking time to see the importance of the small things in life is a beautiful thing.

Family and Friends

If I’m not taking photos, I’m spending time with my husband and our two daughters in our SW Portland home. Or I’m enjoying lattes and laughs with my friends. I love lattes as much as I love my camera, so I’m in the perfect spot here in the Pacific Northwest. I have surrounded myself with positive, thoughtful, caring people who challenge and support me at the same time.

My dream day revolves around these things:

  • My lattes

  • My planner

  • My couch

Having time to daydream, plan, and envision life’s special moments is a true delight for me. I’m thankful to have found this career that lets me take joy in the little pieces of life. And I’m happy that I can share it with you.
